Chapter 23 - MARGARET’S LETTERS
Margaret wrote from custody.
First letter:
I never meant to hurt Grace.
Rejected by therapist.
Intent-centered.
Second:
I believed Anna was taking Grace away from the family.
Rejected.
Blame.
Third, two years later:
I held Grace in a chair while Sabrina cut her hair after Grace begged us to stop. I locked her in the laundry room when she asked for her mother. I told myself I was teaching discipline. I was wrong.
Approved for my review.
I asked Grace, now nine:
“Grandma wrote a letter. Do you want it?”
“No.”
I stored it.
At fourteen, Grace asked.
Read it.
Then:
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
She did not.
At twenty, she wrote one sentence:
I remember, and I have a good life.
Margaret received it.
