Chapter 22 - MY FAILURE BEFORE THE BIRTHDAY

Therapy eventually made me name what I had avoided.

I knew Margaret was cruel before the haircut.

Not criminally.

Not this much.

But cruel.

She compared children.

Called Grace sensitive.

Said Bella was “more polished.”

Told me my freelance work was unstable.

Complained that Grace cried when I left.

I continued weekend visits because Daniel had wanted family closeness.

Because I needed occasional childcare.

Because confrontation exhausted me.

Because I thought:

She would never truly hurt Grace.

That was my judgment.

Wrong.

I did not cause Margaret’s acts.

I did ignore Grace’s growing reluctance.

One night she had said:

“I don’t want Grandma weekend.”

I answered:

“You always have fun once you get there.”

I still regret that sentence.

Grace was six when I apologized.

“You told me you didn’t want to go. I should’ve asked why.”

She said:

“You didn’t know.”

“I should’ve asked.”

She hugged me.

No absolution needed.

Parents can be responsible without making children reassure them.
