Chapter 12 - MY OWN CHARGE

The prosecutor offered diversion.

Misdemeanor assault.

Property? Sabrina's hair was not property.

No serious bodily injury.

Context heavily mitigating.

Still unlawful.

Terms:

Anger-management counseling.

Community service.

No contact with Sabrina.

Reimbursement of her documented medical evaluation costs.

No new offenses.

Potential dismissal after completion.

I accepted.

People online hated that.

The birthday video leaked after a cousin shared a short clip.

It showed Sabrina cutting Grace’s braid.

Then me slapping her.

Then me cutting Sabrina’s hair.

Comments:

MOM OF THE YEAR.

SHE DESERVED WORSE.

QUEEN.

I hated them.

I released one statement through counsel:

“I regret physically retaliating against Sabrina. Protecting Grace required removing her from danger and calling police. It did not require me to cut another person’s hair.”

That ended my public involvement.

No heroic assault narrative.

Grace would someday see the clip.

I wanted the record ready.

Her mother defended her.

Her mother also lost control.

Both true.

At counseling, the facilitator asked:

“What would you do differently?”

“Take Grace.”

“Then?”

“Leave.”

“Then?”

“Call police.”

“Then?”

“Call my attorney.”

“Would that feel satisfying?”

“No.”

“Is satisfaction the goal?”

No.

That was the work.

I did not become calm forever.

I became less interested in revenge wearing protective clothing.
