Chapter 19 - THE VERDICT
Margaret was convicted of:
Child endangerment.
Unlawful restraint.
Evidence tampering.
Conspiracy to manufacture misleading guardianship evidence.
Several fiduciary false-statement counts.
She was acquitted on one broader fraud count involving a trust loan the jury found arguably within her authority.
Acquitted on another count tied to a youth-development payment where Sabrina had performed legitimate services.
Mixed verdict.
Correct.
The court did not punish her for being disliked.
It punished proven acts.
At sentencing months later, I spoke.
“My daughter’s hair grew back.”
Margaret looked at me.
“That is not why this matters.”
I paused.
“The harm was teaching a child that access to food, freedom, and her mother depended on obedience.”
Then my part.
“I responded to the haircut with violence. I completed diversion. I will never tell Grace that my retaliation was the right way to love her.”
Margaret cried.
I continued:
“Margaret believed control was care. She used Grace’s trust, Grace’s words, and Grace’s fear as things adults could manage.”
The judge imposed a meaningful custodial sentence, reduced somewhat for age and lack of prior record, followed by supervision.
Permanent fiduciary ban.
Restitution.
No contact with Grace unless future court and Grace allowed.
No life sentence.
