Chapter 9 - MAKING TEMPORARY LOOK PERMANENT
Naomi received one email through discovery.
Mother to Sabine.
Subject:
After Cedar Vale.
Melisande wrote:
Once Theron starts there, the court will not want to uproot Ione from school and established care if we already have temporary guardianship.
Sabine replied:
He’s taking her with him.
Mother:
He says that now.
Then:
A judge looks at stability, not promises.
There.
She knew I intended to take Ione.
Then another:
Sabine:
You said he signed.
Mother:
He has given me authority for years.
Sabine:
That isn’t the same.
Mother:
It should be.
My entire body went cold.
It should be.
Mother had begun with a moral belief:
I relied on her so much that she deserved authority.
Then she converted that belief into paperwork.
Then:
Sabine:
Is the signature actually his?
No response for fourteen hours.
Then Mother:
It reflects what he already agreed to by conduct.
There.
Not denial.
Then a draft affidavit.
Melisande wrote:
Theron effectively surrendered daily parenting responsibility to me over the last two years.
Not legally true.
But based on her experience.
Then:
His relocation will disrupt the only consistent maternal-style care Ione has known since Elin’s death.
Mother had cast herself as replacement mother.
That hurt.
Then:
If emergency guardianship is entered before relocation, Ione can remain in school and transition gradually.

The plan.
Still one question:
Why Sabine and Miles in my house?
Draft timeline:
Theron expected to spend transition weeks in Cedar Vale.
Sabine will maintain property and prepare for sale if necessary.
No authorization from me.
Mother assumed my decisions.
Again.
Then Naomi said:
“Tomorrow’s forensic report may prove the signature mechanics.”
“And then?”
“Then the secret is not the forgery itself.”
“What is?”
“Why she needed the forgery.”
I already knew.
She wanted to keep Ione.
But Naomi was more precise.
“If your mother believed you were actually abandoning Ione, she could have filed without your consent and asked the court to decide.”
True.
“She forged consent because she wanted the court to believe there was no dispute until after a temporary arrangement existed.”
That distinction hit.
Create status.
Then argue status.
Temporary first.
Permanent by inertia later.
The next morning Elise Warren requested an emergency conference.
She had seen the same records.
Her preliminary recommendation:
Ione remains with Theron.
No unsupervised contact with Melisande pending hearing.
Sabine contact only by agreement and no discussion of case.
No need remove cousin relationship.
Then Elise said:
“I need the court to understand this was not simply a grandmother overreacting to travel.”

She looked at the timeline.
