Chapter 24 - I TESTIFY WITHOUT MAKING MYSELF THE HERO

The next morning Naomi asked me:

“Why did you travel so much after Elin died?”

“I knew how to work.”

“What do you mean?”

“I didn’t know how to sit in the house with a three-year-old asking why her mother wasn’t coming back.”

Silence.

“So you worked?”

“Yes.”

“Did that burden Melisande?”

“Yes.”

“Did you thank her enough?”

“No.”

Mother looked down.

Then:

“Did you abandon Ione?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because relying too much on my mother was a parenting failure in some ways. It was not surrender.”

Good.

Then:

“Did your new job increase or reduce your parenting availability?”

“Reduce travel significantly.”

“Why accept it?”

“Because I needed to stop building Ione’s life around my absences.”

Then:

“Why move?”

“Commuting eighty-two miles daily would recreate absence another way.”

Good.

Then my mistakes.

Mud.

Voicemail.

I admitted.

Then Naomi asked:

“Why not use those mistakes as reason to let Melisande become guardian?”

“Because I can correct my behavior without giving away parenthood.”

There.

Then opposing counsel:

“Isn’t that exactly what Melisande believed? That your behavior required correction?”

“She had the right to tell me.”

“Anything else?”

“She could seek lawful visitation advice. She could even file a guardianship petition without my consent if she truly believed legal standards were met.”

Then:

“But?”

“She could not forge me.”

Simple.

Then the house.

“Did you ever authorize Sabine to move in?”

“No.”

“Plan to sell?”

“No.”

“Plan to leave Ione behind?”

“No.”

“Tell Melisande Ione would remain in Ashbrook?”

“No.”

Then the school.

Change-of-address attempt.

No authorization.

Then I said one thing I had not planned.

“My mother was important to Ione.”

Naomi stopped.

I continued.

“She still is.”

Mother looked at me.

“I am not asking the court to pretend she was only a babysitter. She helped us survive after Elin died.”

Then:

“But being important does not make my signature hers.”

The judge wrote something.

I did not know what.

Then:

“And loving Ione does not make lying to her about abandonment acceptable.”

Mother cried.

May you like

No victory.

Truth.
