Chapter 8 - THE PRINTER LOG

Digital evidence came from ordinary devices.

My home printer.

Cloud print history.

Mother had used it during my trip.

Her tablet connected to Wi-Fi.

Documents printed:

Temporary Guardianship Petition.

Consent to Guardianship.

School Change Authorization.

Medical Care Authorization.

One page titled:

Residence Continuity Timeline.

Printed five days before I returned.

Could I see contents?

Later.

Metadata alone.

Then a scanned file:

THERON-SIGNATURE-SCHOOL.pdf.

My stomach dropped.

It appeared to be a scan of a school field-trip permission form I had signed months earlier.

My signature.

Why had Mother scanned it?

She said:

“I scanned school papers while organizing Ione’s records.”

Possible.

Then PDF editing log.

A copy of my signature image had been cropped.

Created on Mother’s tablet.

Time:

11:38 p.m.

Two nights before the guardianship petition was filed.

That was stronger.

But Mother’s lawyer argued:

Could have been for document organization.

Need show insertion.

Then consent PDF metadata.

Edited at 11:44 p.m.

Same device.

Again.

Still needed expert.

No miracle conclusion.

Then the Residence Continuity Timeline.

Court ordered produced.

Entries:

Theron away — 8 nights.

Theron away — 5 nights.

Melisande school pickup.

Melisande pediatric visit.

Ione sleeps Melisande condo.

Then future dates:

Theron Cedar Vale transition.

Ione remains.

Sabine/Miles move into house.

Bed removed.

School address updated.

Temporary order entered.

Those future entries chilled me.

Not notes after events.

Plan.

Then one line:

Create visible continuity before hearing.

Naomi looked at me.

“That is important.”

“What does it mean legally?”

“Depends what they intended.”

We were not there yet.

Then another:

No bedroom at Theron home once move starts.

My pulse jumped.

“They sold the bed for evidence.”

“Maybe.”

“Come on.”

“I agree it looks that way. We prove it.”

Again.

Precision.

Then Sabine’s text to Mother:

Why does her bed have to go before court?

Mother:

Because he can’t claim she has a settled room there if it’s already transitioned.

There.

Sabine:

Does Theron know?

Mother:

He knows Ione is staying.

False.

Then Sabine:

That’s not what I asked.

No reply.

That message separated them.

Sabine had doubts.

Mother continued.

Then the expert report would come next week.

And for the first time, I understood:

May you like

The mess in my driveway had not been random cruelty.

They had been changing the physical world to match the story on the forged paper.
