Chapter 18 - THE EVALUATOR’S REPORT
Guardian Elise filed the most balanced document in the case.
Findings:
Theron is a fit parent.
No evidence of abandonment.
Ione has a secure primary attachment to Theron.
Theron historically relied heavily on Melisande due work travel.
That reliance was substantial enough that abrupt severance from Melisande could harm Ione emotionally.
Melisande forged Theron’s signature and attempted to create a legal arrangement he did not consent to.
That conduct demonstrates impaired boundaries and judgment.
Sabine participated in room clearing and property sale but did not create the forged signature.
Ione wishes to remain with Theron.
Ione also wishes to continue seeing Melisande if she stops threatening separation.
There.
Then the relocation.
Elise visited Cedar Vale.
My proposed rental neighborhood.
School.
Commute.
Job schedule.
Finding:
The move would likely increase Theron’s daily availability, though it would disrupt school and extended-family proximity.
Recommendation:
Permit Theron to make ordinary parental residence decisions.
Delay move until school year completion as he already plans.
Support structured grandparent contact if safe.
No guardianship.
No permanent no-contact.
That should have ended it.
Mother refused.
Why?
Her lawyer recommended settlement.
She still wanted a judicial finding that her caregiving role mattered.
Maybe pride.
Maybe fear.
Then one line from Elise’s report hurt me:
Theron sometimes minimizes the extent to which he delegated emotional as well as logistical parenting during bereavement.
I read twice.
Elin died.
I survived by working.
Maybe too much.
Mother filled space.
I did not thank her enough.
Then she weaponized the space.
Both true.
I told Ione’s therapist:
“I feel like if I admit Mother helped raise her, I’m giving her case oxygen.”
Lila said:
“Truth does not become dangerous because someone misuses it.”
Good.
I could say:
Mother helped.
Mother mattered.
Mother forged.
