Chapter 7 - THE VOICEMAIL I SHOULD NOT HAVE SENT

The voicemail lasted forty-three seconds.

Too long.

Too angry.

Mother had just filed a supplemental declaration claiming I was “removing Ione from the only stable caregiving structure she has known.”

I called.

She did not answer.

I should have stopped.

Instead:

“You forged my name, sold my daughter’s bed, tried to change her school address, and now you’re calling yourself stable. You will never be alone with Ione again. I will make sure every person in that courtroom knows exactly what you are.”

Then:

“If you keep pushing this, you are going to regret every lie.”

I hung up.

Five minutes later I knew.

Naomi called fifteen minutes after that.

“She forwarded the voicemail to her lawyer.”

“Of course.”

“Do not contact her again.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Fair.

Then Mother used it.

Supplemental filing:

Theron demonstrates hostility and intends to sever Ione from maternal extended family as punishment.

Maternal? She is paternal grandmother. Better "paternal extended family". In story accurate: paternal.

She attached voicemail.

Did it prove I was dangerous?

No.

Did it show poor emotional control?

Yes.

Then my wheelbarrow retaliation.

Cleaning and replacement estimates:

Two handbags salvageable.

One designer bag permanently stained.

Total loss:

$3,600.

Sabine wanted $5,900.

We negotiated later.

Separate.

The family court saw photos.

Mother’s lawyer argued:

“Theron responds to conflict by destroying property.”

Two incidents?

Only one.

Frame? no.

So one.

Still.

Then Elise asked me:

“Did Ione see?”

“Yes.”

“Did you regret?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she had just watched adults throw her things onto a driveway, and I taught her the answer was to ruin theirs.”

Good.

Then:

“What have you changed?”

No direct contact with Mother.

Counseling.

No family arguments around Ione.

Property exchanges through third party.

Concrete.

Then Ione’s new bed arrived.

She chose blue sheets.

Miles sent a drawing through Sabine’s lawyer? That might be cute but odd. Sabine asked whether Miles could send Ione a card. I asked therapist. Approved.

Card:

SORRY ABOUT YOUR BED. I DIDN’T WANT IT.

Ione cried.

Then laughed.

She wrote back:

I KNOW.

No adult content.

Good.

Cousins preserved.

Then Cedar Vale.

Mother learned from court filing.

Her lawyer requested emergency order preventing relocation.

But guardianship court could consider residence.

No custody co-parent to oppose, but as petitioner, Mother could request.

Judge said:

Relocation issue will be considered with guardianship, but no presumption grandmother can block parent absent legal basis.

Good.

Still.

Mother had made her goal explicit now:

Ione stays here.

Not:

May you like

Theron travels too much.

The move was the real threat.
