Chapter 17 - MOTHER’S OFFER

Mother offered settlement.

Withdraw guardianship.

Admit signature unauthorized.

Agree Ione lives with me.

In exchange:

I delay Cedar Vale move for one year.

Ione spends every other weekend with Mother.

Two weeks summer.

One holiday.

No supervision after first month.

I stared.

Naomi asked:

“What do you think?”

“Still control.”

“Yes.”

Not all terms unreasonable in a healthy grandparent relationship.

But tying them to withdrawal of a fraudulent guardianship case was.

I rejected.

Then countered.

Mother withdraws petition.

Acknowledges no abandonment.

No conditions on my relocation.

Therapeutic visits continue.

Future contact expands based on Ione’s comfort, evaluator recommendations and Mother’s compliance.

No guaranteed overnights yet.

Mother rejected.

Why?

She wanted certainty.

That was the whole problem.

Then she messaged through portal:

“I cannot build my life around whether you feel generous.”

I replied after Naomi reviewed:

“Contact with Ione is not a payment I owe for your past help.”

She did not answer.

Then two days later:

“I understand why you say that. I do not know how to trust that you will not simply move and erase me.”

There.

Fear.

I responded:

“I will not promise geography. I will promise not to use Ione to punish you.”

That was as far as I could go.

Then:

“If contact is safe, I will support it.”

Mother wrote:

“Safe according to you.”

I did not reply.

Therapist.

Guardian ad litem.

Court.

Not just me.

Then one supervised in-person visit.

Mother and Ione at counseling center.

Mother brought no gifts.

Good.

Ione showed a drawing of new Cedar Vale house we had not yet rented.

Mother looked.

Her mouth tightened.

Then she said:

“Nice.”

Progress measured in one word.

No:

You’re taking her away.

Then Ione said:

“You can drive.”

Mother laughed sadly.

“Yes.”

Eighty-two miles is not exile.

May you like

Mother had acted like it was another continent.

Maybe fear had inflated distance too.
