Chapter 8 - THE SECURITY MEN
The two security men who appeared in the nursery were Marcus Bell and Aaron Webb.
They worked for me.
Not my mother.
That distinction existed on paper.
In practice, Vivian had lived at Harcourt House for thirty-eight years.
Staff obeyed her.
Marcus testified later that two days before the nursery incident, Vivian told security:
"Claire is not to leave the estate with Noah without Graham."
He asked:
"Mr. Harcourt requested that?"
Vivian answered:
"He agrees."
Marcus did not verify.
Why?
Because Claire had no plan to leave.
It felt hypothetical.
Then the morning of the incident, Claire asked the driver to prepare a car for her postpartum checkup.
Vivian canceled it.
Claire used a rideshare instead.
When she returned, Vivian said:
"You embarrassed this house."
Claire answered:
"I went to a doctor."
Vivian:
"Without staff."
Claire:
"Correct."
That entry appeared in the ledger:
Mother leaves estate without security supervision.
Not:
woman attends medical appointment.
Everything became noncompliance once the observer wanted it to.
After the nursery incident, I asked Marcus:
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
He looked miserable.
"Sir, I didn’t know she was stopping Mrs. Harcourt from medical care."
"What did you think?"
"Household disagreements."
"And if she told you Claire couldn’t leave?"
"I would have asked you before physically stopping anyone."
Good.
No one had confined Claire.
No locked gates.
No guards blocking her.
