Chapter 14 - I FIRE TOO MANY PEOPLE

Then I made another mistake.

I ordered every nursery and household staff member who had followed Vivian’s instructions terminated.

Eight people.

House manager.

Night nanny.

Two housekeepers.

Driver.

Assistant.

Security coordinator.

Personal aide.

My HR director said:

"No."

I said:

"They enabled her."

"Which ones knew she was interfering with medical care?"

Silence.

She continued.

"The housekeeper changed sheets."

"She logged Claire’s sleep."

"Because Mrs. Harcourt told her this was a newborn-care chart."

The driver?

Canceled one car after Vivian told him you requested it.

The night nanny?

Followed feeding schedules but also documented Claire refusing them.

The assistant?

Printed the blessing program.

No one knew the full scheme except Vivian.

I was trying to clean the house by removing everyone who had touched the dirt.

Wrong.

We suspended two staff pending review where they had actively overridden Claire’s instructions after being directly corrected.

Others received retraining.

Marcus and Aaron stayed.

The house manager remained after a formal warning because she had failed to verify authority.

I withdrew the mass termination instruction.

Wrote:

My initial direction was overbroad and based on anger rather than individual conduct.

Another humiliating memo.

I was collecting them.

Good.
