Chapter 7 - MY MOTHER USED MY NAME

Claire confronted me with messages.

VIVIAN:

Graham wants Noah in the nursery tonight.

I had not said that.

VIVIAN:

Graham agrees you should rest during the family breakfast.

I had said:

Make sure Claire gets sleep.

Not:

keep my wife away from breakfast.

VIVIAN:

Graham prefers the pediatrician calls come through me while he works.

False.

Another:

Graham said no outside visitors until day forty.

I had said no large visitor groups until Claire wanted them.

Different.

Then Claire showed me her replies.

Did Graham say that?

Yes.

I’ll ask him.

He’s busy. Do not create another issue for him.

There.

My workload became leverage.

My mother transformed:

Graham is busy

into:

Graham has delegated your authority to me.

Had I?

Not explicitly.

Practically?

Sometimes.

I had told Vivian:

"Handle the house."

"Help Claire."

"Keep visitors under control."

"Make sure she eats."

Each sentence became broader in her hands.

My fault was not that I caused her behavior.

My fault was giving a controlling person vague authority because I preferred not to manage details during a demanding business quarter.

Claire asked me:

"Did you ever tell her she was in charge of me?"

"No."

"Did you ever tell her she was in charge of Noah?"

"No."

"Did you correct her when she acted like it?"

May you like

Silence.

Not enough.
