Chapter 9 - THE CAMERA FOOTAGE

The hotel cameras showed the slap clearly.

No missing minute.

No mysterious system outage.

Travis and I stood near the ballroom’s north column.

He spoke.

I shook my head.

He stepped closer.

I turned slightly away.

He took my elbow.

I pulled free.

He said something.

Then slapped me.

Open hand.

Immediate.

No defensive movement from me.

No prior strike.

No question.

The hotel audio did not capture the words clearly because the orchestra was playing.

Witnesses did.

“You married into my family. Remember that.”

Raymond’s:

“Who exactly are you planning to call, you orphan?”

My call.

Dad entering.

Then later, police.

The evidence was almost disappointingly simple.

Travis’s lawyer advised him not to deny the strike.

Good.

The argument would become:

Context.

Loss of control.

No prior physical assault.

Minor injury.

Remorse.

All relevant to disposition.

None erased the hand.

Then Raymond.

Laughing at domestic violence is not automatically a crime.

Cruelty is not always prosecutable.

He had not ordered the slap.

No evidence.

That distinction mattered.

The deeper consequences for Raymond would come from governance and civil conduct.

Not a fantasy criminal charge because everyone hated him.
