Chapter 25 - RAYMOND TELLS THE TRUTH ABOUT ORPHANS
Raymond testified the next morning.
He wore the same signet ring as the gala.
No drink.
No head table.
He began defensively.
“The families had discussed alignment for years.”
True.
“Marcello’s illness created uncertainty.”
True.
“Investors wanted stability.”
Some did.
Then:
“Did Camilla approve your proposed structure?”
“No.”
“Did you believe she would?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Travis was her husband.”
There.
Counsel waited.
“That does not answer why.”
Raymond’s face tightened.
Then:
“Because when you marry, your spouse becomes your first family.”
“Does first mean controlling?”
“No.”
“Did you behave as though it did?”
Silence.
Finally:
“Yes.”
Then the gala.
“Why call Camilla an orphan?”
Raymond looked at me.
“I wanted to hurt her.”
Simple.
Not:
joke.
Not:
metaphor.
Not:
old family language.
“Why?”
“Because she had embarrassed Travis.”
“How?”
“She refused him publicly.”
“She had refused privately too?”
“Yes.”
“So the problem was not public surprise.”
“No.”
“What was it?”
Raymond looked toward his son.
Then toward Dad, seated behind counsel after finishing his own witness appearance.
“She was choosing herself.”
There.
The room became very still.
Raymond continued without being asked.
“I believed if Marcello was no longer standing behind her, she would eventually accept that Kane authority was the safer place to stand.”
Then:
“When she called him and he walked through that door, I realized I had built my entire plan around the idea that she needed a man behind her.”
He looked at me.
“She didn’t.”
No applause.
