Chapter 11 - DAD WANTS TO DESTROY THE ALLIANCE

Dad wanted every Kane partnership terminated.
Immediately.
I almost laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
He stared.
“He hit you.”
“Yes.”
“Raymond tried to subsume your voting rights.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
“So our hotel employees did not slap me.”
“Camilla.”
“The joint rehabilitation center did not slap me.”
“Camilla.”
“The pension fund did not call me an orphan.”
Dad leaned back.
He hated hearing his own logic from me.
Then:
“What do you want?”
“Targeted review.”
“Too slow.”
“That is the point.”
He rubbed his signet ring.
Old habit.
Then said:
“I could end Raymond by Friday.”
“Financially?”
“He would survive.”
“Socially?”
Silence.
“Dad.”
He looked at me.
“Do not make my marriage the excuse you use to fight a man you already disliked.”
That landed.
He and Raymond had competed for thirty years.
Market territory.
Charity boards.
Old respect.
Whatever people like them called power when they wanted it to sound inherited instead of chosen.
Dad nodded once.
“Fine.”
It was not fine.
May you like
It was restraint.
I accepted.
