Chapter 24 - DANIEL’S VOICE

At twenty-eight, Lily asked to hear Daniel’s old voicemails.

I had saved them.

Not all.

Enough.

One said:

Sarah, tell Lily Daddy loves her. Truck inspection ran late. I’ll be home after eight.

It was recorded three weeks before the crash.

Lily cried.

“He sounds younger than I expected.”

“He was thirty-one.”

“That is young.”

“Very.”

Then she listened to another:

Dad is pushing the distribution thing again. I’m done arguing tonight. Pasta?

Lily smiled.

“He liked pasta.”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

Genes? Maybe.

Family? Definitely.

Then:

If they start treating Ethan and Lily like branches instead of cousins, we walk.

Daniel had seen it coming.

Not perfectly.

Not enough to prevent.

Enough to leave warning.

Lily asked:

“Would Dad have fixed everything?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“He had flaws.”

“Like?”

“He avoided conflict until he couldn’t. He trusted family longer than he should. He sometimes thought being right was the same as being effective.”

“That sounds like you.”

“Rude.”

She laughed.

The dead became human.

Not saint.

May you like

Not victim only.

That mattered.
