Chapter 17 - HELEN ASKS FOR CONTACT

Lily was nine when Helen requested one supervised visit.

She had completed custody and was on probation.

No fiduciary role.

No access to trust decisions.

Maya asked Lily.

“No.”

That ended it.

Helen asked again a year later.

Lily said:

“Can I read a letter first?”

Helen wrote.

No lawyer language.

Lily,

I gave Ethan better food because I wanted him to feel like the family’s future.

I stared at the line.

At least it was honest.

She continued:

I told myself you needed to learn not to expect what his branch received. That was cruel. You were not asking for money. You were asking to eat dinner with your family.

Lily stopped reading.

“Did she know?”

“Yes.”

“That makes it worse.”

“Yes.”

Helen admitted using Daniel’s death to rank the children.

Admitted she knew he wanted Lily recognized.

Admitted she stayed loyal to Robert’s control.

Then:

I loved you and still treated you badly.

Lily looked at me.

“Can that happen?”

“Yes.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

She chose no visit.

At twelve, she changed her mind.

Neutral therapy center.

Helen looked smaller.

Lily asked:

“Why did you laugh?”

“At dinner?”

“Yes.”

Helen cried.

“Because I wanted everyone to agree with me.”

“About steak?”

“About where you belonged.”

Lily nodded.

“That’s worse.”

“Yes.”

The meeting ended after nineteen minutes.

No hug.

No forgiveness.

Helen later received permission to send birthday cards.

That was the relationship for years.

Small.

May you like

Safe.

Chosen.
