Chapter 23 - HELEN’S LAST YEARS

Helen lived longer.
After Robert died, she moved into a condominium.
No Hearthstone office.
No foundation role.
No trust access.
She cooked for herself badly.
Lily visited twice a year.
One Thanksgiving Helen burned the turkey.
Lily looked at me across the table.
I tried not to laugh.
Helen noticed.
“I deserve that.”
Lily said:
“No. Turkey’s just burned.”
That sentence ended decades of symbolism in six words.
Helen cried anyway.
Later, alone, she told me:
“I thought if Ethan had more, Claire’s side would stay close to me.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
“You hurt Lily trying to control proximity.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel?”
She looked down.
“I failed him too.”
No grand forgiveness.
I had stopped needing one.
Helen died at eighty-one.
Her personal estate was ordinary compared with the family myths.
Jewelry.
Condo.
Investments.
Restitution obligations already satisfied.
She left Lily a handwritten recipe book.
Lily kept it.
Not because every page was redeemed.
