Chapter 18 - ROBERT’S APPEAL
Robert appealed one fiduciary conviction.
The appellate court found the jury instruction had improperly combined two types of self-dealing.
That count was vacated.
His false certification conviction and core fraud plea remained.
His sentence decreased modestly.
Headlines:
ROBERT REED CLEARED IN MAJOR TRUST CASE.
False.
Lily was thirteen.
She read the actual opinion with me.
“So he still lied?”
“Yes.”
“Still got money from the warehouse?”
“Yes.”
“But one legal part was wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does the headline say cleared?”
“Simple stories get clicks.”
She rolled her eyes.
Good.
I explained:
“We want courts to fix mistakes even for people who hurt us.”
“Why?”
“Because otherwise someday they can ignore mistakes against you.”
She hated the lesson.
Then accepted it.
Robert later sent one letter.
Lily refused.
At sixteen, she read it.
He wrote:
I believed Daniel’s branch should stay inactive because Hearthstone needed one family line strong enough to act quickly.
Lily whispered:
“He still thinks he was right.”
Then the next paragraph:
That belief made me treat your rights as an obstacle instead of a responsibility. Your father warned me. I ignored him.
