Claire spent years repairing her own role.
She never committed criminal fraud.
She did sign foundation budgets she did not understand.
She benefited professionally from Daniel-branch temporary allocations.
She failed to challenge Helen.
The foundation board imposed a three-year governance bar.
She completed ethics training.
Returned compensation tied to improperly allocated programs.
Then chose not to return as director.
“I was good at programs,” she told me. “Not governance.”
That was self-knowledge.
She became a pediatric community outreach coordinator at a hospital.
Lower status.
More direct work.
Ethan saw less wealth display.
More ordinary life.
He thrived.
At fourteen, he asked Claire:
“Would I have had less stuff if Lily’s branch was active?”
“Probably less extra stuff.”
“Would that have mattered?”
“No.”
“Then why did Grandma act like it would ruin us?”
“Because adults can confuse less control with loss.”
Ethan later apologized to Lily for things he said as a child.
She laughed.
“You were eight.”
“I said I was the real one.”
“Grandma taught you.”
“I still said it.”
“Fine. Apology accepted.”
Then she beat him at Mario Kart.
