Chapter 15 - THE COMPANY WITHOUT ROBERT

Hearthstone appointed Evelyn Ross as permanent CEO.

No Reed surname.

Employee representatives gained two board seats.

An independent safety committee gained veto power over critical fleet maintenance decisions.

The First Harvest Trust remained powerful.

But neither Claire nor I personally controlled the twenty-six-percent branches.

Professional trustees did.

That embarrassed people who wanted a dynasty story.

Good.

The reopened bidding for Hearthstone Distribution resulted in a partial sale.

The strongest buyer offered more than Robert’s preferred partner.

Employee protections.

Pension contributions.

Fleet modernization.

The independent trustees approved.

Daniel’s branch voted through professionals.

Claire’s too.

No family dinner.

No threats.

No burned food.

The sale paid down debt and stabilized the company.

Hearthstone kept its restaurant brands and institutional food business.

Robert had insisted selling outside his circle would destroy legacy.

It didn’t.

The company got healthier.

The first major board meeting without him lasted three hours instead of six.

Apparently legacy had been verbose.

I attended only as observer during beneficiary-protector training.

I did not want a management job.

I worked as a property insurance adjuster.

I liked work with clear claim files and fewer family portraits.

Commonwealth asked whether I wanted formal governance education.

“Yes.”

Not because I wanted power.

Because ignorance had already been expensive.

I learned:

Voting rights.

Economic rights.

Fiduciary duties.

Recusal.

Conflicts.

Independent valuation.

What a trustee actually does.

I wished Daniel had lived to learn with me.

Maybe he would have hated every minute.

Probably.

At home Lily asked:

“Do I have to work at Hearthstone when I’m big?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Veterinarian.”

“Why?”

May you like

“Dogs don’t burn steak.”

I laughed so hard I had to sit down.
