Chapter 22 - THE STEAK AGAIN

Lily was twenty-three when she ordered steak voluntarily.

I stared.

She caught me.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Stop.”

“I’m not doing anything.”

“You’re watching my plate.”

“I’m allowed to look.”

“It’s medium rare.”

“I see.”

“Grandma’s was charcoal.”

“I remember.”

“So do I.”

She cut a piece.

Ate.

Shrugged.

“Fine.”

That was all.

No tears.

No symbolic reclaiming speech.

Food became food.

Later that year, Lily attended a family reunion where Helen was present.

No one arranged seating by branch.

No one assigned different meals.

Helen asked:

“Can I sit here?”

Lily looked at the empty chair.

“Sure.”

Small.

Not reconciliation.

But chosen contact.

Robert did not attend.

His health was poor.

He later died at seventy-nine after heart failure.

Lily attended the funeral.

Not because she forgave everything.

Because she wanted to.

His lawful estate paid remaining restitution claims before distribution.

He left Lily his old pocketknife.

She declined.

Ethan kept it.
