Chapter 9 - THE DOORBELL CAMERA
Police became involved only after Lauren chose to report.
Hospital staff documented injuries and mandatory reports consistent with state requirements.
Lauren initially asked for time.
Jasmine explained options.
No one forced a dramatic statement from her bed.
Two days later, after seeing Sophie through the NICU glass, Lauren said:
“I want it documented.”
Detective Mara Quinn interviewed her.
Brent denied the shove.
He said Lauren stumbled backward during an argument.
No intentional contact.
Then investigators requested home-camera footage.
Brent said the kitchen camera had been unplugged for weeks.
True.
The front doorbell was not.
Wednesday, 8:02 p.m., audio captured shouting through the closed door.
Lauren:
“Give me my phone.”
Brent:
“You’re not calling your sister.”
Lauren:
“I’m calling my doctor.”
A loud crash.
Then silence.
8:09.
Mom’s car arrived.
8:14.
Lauren’s portal message.
8:26.
Brent’s laptop came online.
8:31.
Lauren’s portal message was read.
Sequence.
Not proof of every action.
Enough to make investigators search carefully.
The doorbell camera also captured Mom leaving at 10:47.
Lauren remained inside.
Brent followed Mom to the porch.
His voice was faint.
Patricia:
“If she starts bleeding, you take her in.”
Brent:
“She’s fine.”
Patricia:
“You don’t know that.”
Brent:
“Then why did you tell her not to call Elena?”
My mother answered:
“Because Elena makes everything bigger.”
I listened twice.
Not because it surprised me.
Because Mom had spent days saying Lauren begged her not to tell me.
