Chapter 6 - NOT THE FIRST TIME

The first time Brent grabbed Lauren hard enough to bruise her was at twenty-two weeks.

She had ordered takeout without telling him.

That was the trigger.

Not the reason.

He was angry about money.

He squeezed her upper arm while telling her she was irresponsible.

The next day, he bought flowers.

Lauren told no one.

At twenty-five weeks, he shoved a bedroom door closed while she stood in it.

The edge struck her shoulder.

At twenty-seven, he threw her phone.

At twenty-nine, he blocked her from leaving the kitchen.

At thirty, he grabbed the back of her neck.

None of those incidents involved direct abdominal injury.

She catalogued them only after the hospital.

Before, they were:

Bad fight.

Stress.

He didn’t mean.

He never punched me.

That last sentence had protected Brent longer than any lie.

Daniel told me privately:

“People think abuse has to look like one specific thing.”

I snapped:

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You watched her all afternoon.”

“I noticed medical signs.”

“Not Brent.”

“No.”

I wanted somebody to have known.

Because if Daniel knew, he could have saved her earlier.

That fantasy was unfair.

I knew Lauren longer than he did.

I had not saved her either.

Three months earlier, Lauren called me crying after an argument.

Brent had taken her credit card because she spent too much on nursery furniture.

I told her:

“You two need to stop treating every purchase like a referendum on your marriage.”

She became quiet.

I had turned control into mutual conflict.

That memory hurt.

Dr. Grant—my therapist later—would tell me:

“You responded to the information you were given.”

I would answer:

May you like

“She gave me more.”

Both were true.
