Chapter 14 - THE SECOND MEDICAL MESSAGE
The old phone contained another portal exchange.
Twenty-nine weeks.
Lauren:
Had some spotting after argument/stress. No pain now. Baby moving.
Clinic:
Given bleeding in third trimester, please call triage immediately.
No follow-up message.
The clinic’s call log showed Lauren answered that time.
She spoke to nurse.
Nurse recommended evaluation.
Lauren declined.
This time Brent had not impersonated her.
She had made the choice.
Why?
“He said if I went in, I’d have to explain the bruise.”
“What bruise?”
Her shoulder.
He had grabbed her.
“I thought if I told the truth, police would come.”
“Maybe.”
“I wasn’t ready.”
That mattered.
Not every delayed visit was Brent’s stolen choice.
Some were Lauren’s frightened choices.
Abuse narrows options without erasing agency.
Her attorney insisted the case remain accurate.
The Wednesday portal impersonation was Brent.
