Lauren wanted to cancel the shower Friday night.
Mom talked her out of it.
Texts:
Lauren:
I don’t feel good.
Patricia:
You’ve planned this for months.
Lauren:
Belly keeps tightening.
Patricia:
Then sit tomorrow. Everyone will take care of you.
Lauren:
Maybe I should call doctor.
Patricia:
If you’re truly worried, yes. But don’t let Brent drama turn into a medical panic again.

That word hurt.
Mom had absorbed Brent’s narrative too.
Lauren:
I think I just need rest.
Patricia:
Good. Shower will cheer you up.
At 11:42 p.m., Brent texted Mom separately.
Thanks. She needs normal.
Mom:
No fighting tomorrow.
Brent:
Promise.
Mom:
And if she mentions Wednesday?
Brent:
She won’t.
Mom:
Good.
The baby shower became part of concealment.
Not planned as a trap.
A performance of normal after a frightening week.
Mom wanted photographs proving family was okay.
Brent wanted the same.
