Chapter 24 - THE VERDICT

The jury convicted Brent on the principal domestic-assault count and several related offenses involving interference and unauthorized account conduct.

One more serious causation count tied specifically to the full extent of Sophie’s neonatal injury produced a lesser included conviction rather than the highest charge prosecutors sought.

Evidence had limits.

The verdict respected them.

At sentencing, Lauren spoke.

She did not say:

You almost killed our baby.

She said:

“You knew I needed a doctor and decided protecting yourself was more important than letting me reach one.”

Then:

“I used to think the worst thing you did was shove me.”

She looked directly at him.

“It wasn’t. It was hearing me say I was scared afterward and teaching me that getting help would destroy our family.”

Brent received a substantial prison sentence followed by supervision, protective conditions, and consequences for the digital and domestic offenses.
