Chapter 10 - WHY BRENT HATED DANIEL
Brent did not hate doctors.
He hated one doctor.
My husband.
Daniel had never liked him much.
That was not proof of anything.
They were different.
Daniel asked direct questions.
Brent treated questions like challenges.
Years earlier, at Thanksgiving, Daniel corrected him after Brent joked that women overreacted to labor pain.
Brent never forgot.
After Lauren became pregnant, Daniel tried not to become the family obstetrician.
He recommended a practice.
Then stepped back.
Brent interpreted even that as intrusion.
Text from Brent to Lauren:
Your brother-in-law needs to stop treating you like a case.
Lauren:
He asked if my blood pressure was okay.
Brent:
Exactly.
At twenty-eight weeks, Lauren mentioned headaches to Daniel.
He said:
“Tell your OB.”
Brent later accused him of scaring her about preeclampsia.
The blood pressure was normal.
Brent used that as proof Daniel overreacted.
So when real danger came, Brent had a ready story.
Daniel always thinks something is wrong.
At the baby shower, Lauren told herself the same thing.
