Brent’s finances entered the case during divorce discovery.
Not because money caused the abruption.
Because control rarely lives in only one room.
Lauren earned more than him.
She was a software project manager.
Brent sold commercial roofing contracts.
He resented the difference.
After pregnancy, Lauren reduced hours.
Brent began managing household finances.
He told her stress was bad for the baby.
By thirty weeks, her salary still entered the joint account but her card had a spending alert set at $250.
Brent’s did not.
He had accumulated $47,000 in hidden debt.
Sports betting.
Options trading.
Travel.
Not catastrophic.
Secret.
Lauren discovered part of it Wednesday.
That was the argument.
She found a credit-card statement.
Hotels.
Not an affair.
Brent had been attending high-stakes gambling weekends with clients.
He called it networking.
She said:
“You lied to me.”
He took her phone when she tried to photograph the statement.
She reached.
He shoved.
The kitchen island struck her left side.
