Chapter 16 - DANIEL TESTIFIES AS A WITNESS
Brent’s attorney tried to make Daniel the story.
Obsessive doctor.
Overprotective brother-in-law.
Professional rivalry.
At a preliminary hearing:
“You touched Lauren’s abdomen without being her physician?”
“She invited several relatives to feel fetal movement.”
“You then diagnosed placental abruption at a party?”
“No.”
“You said it was an abruption.”
“I said it could be and recommended emergency evaluation.”
“Based on touching her stomach?”
“Based on uterine rigidity, reported symptoms, dampness later identified as bleeding, and clinical concern.”
“You frightened the family.”
“Yes.”
“Was that your intention?”
“No.”
“What was?”
“To get Lauren evaluated.”
“Did you treat her?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I was family and an ambulance was available.”
The attorney paused.
Daniel’s restraint became more useful than heroics.
Then:
“Is it true you disliked Brent before this?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
The lawyer smiled.
“Why?”
“He treated disagreement as disrespect.”
“Did you believe he abused Lauren?”
“Before that day, I had no evidence of physical abuse.”
