Chapter 25 - THE FAMILY COOKOUT

The third summer after the incident, we held a cookout at my house.
I hosted.
I paid.
Because I invited.
Clear.
Emily was not invited.
Diane was not invited.
Some relatives were.
Including two who had apologized and changed.
One who had laughed at the patio arrived early.
He pulled me aside.
“I’m still ashamed.”
“You apologized.”
“I know.”
“Then behave differently.”
Simple.
He did.
At dinner, Evan helped carry rolls.
Another child reached before the platter was placed down.
No one slapped anyone.
My cousin laughed gently.
“Everybody gets food.”
Evan looked at me.
Not frightened.
Just noticing.
We ate.
No speeches.
I had expected the first safe family cookout to feel triumphant.
Mostly I worried the potato salad had been outside too long.
