Chapter 17 - EMILY TELLS THE WHOLE TRUTH

Emily asked for one final meeting.

I agreed after six months.

She brought no gifts.

Good.

“I left something out.”

My body tightened.

“What?”

“The first time I saw Diane withhold food from Evan.”

“You told investigators.”

“Not all of it.”

I waited.

“After about forty minutes, I asked if I could make him a sandwich.”

“And?”

“She said no.”

“You listened.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she told me you wanted her to teach him patience.”

I stared.

“Did you believe that?”

“For maybe a minute.”

“Then?”

“I knew it sounded wrong.”

“Still listened.”

“Yes.”

She cried.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

Good.

“What are you asking?”

“Nothing. I needed the truth in the right place.”

That phrase sounded familiar.

Bad in the right size.

Maybe we were all learning.

Emily had not deprived Evan repeatedly.

She had participated once through silence.

Then laughed at the patio.

Then became the person who provided evidence.

All true.

I said:

“I appreciate you telling investigators.”

She nodded.

“Doesn’t erase it.”

“No.”

We finished coffee.

Did not become friends again.

But I stopped seeing her as a frozen image holding a cup and laughing.

She became a whole person who failed and later acted better.

That did not create access.

It created accuracy.
