Chapter 21 - CLAIRE STOPS PAYING FOR EVERYONE
I kept one bad habit longer than I should have.
Funding family gatherings.
Not Diane’s.
Others.
A cousin needed help.
An aunt asked me to cover Thanksgiving meat.
Someone assumed I would pay for the summer picnic because:
“You always did.”
I heard Diane in that sentence.
Not because asking for help was abuse.
Because my generosity had become an assigned role.
So I changed the system.
If I invited:
I paid.
If someone else invited:
They planned their budget.
If we wanted shared costs:
We agreed beforehand.
No mysterious Claire card.
No gratitude ledger.
No financial leverage.
One relative called me selfish.
I asked:
“Do you want me there, or do you want my debit card?”
Silence.
Useful.
The family became smaller.
Then healthier.
Some gatherings got cheaper.
Burgers instead of steaks.
Paper plates.
