Chapter 23 - DIANE’S MEDIATED STATEMENT
Two years after the incident, Diane requested a mediated statement.
Not a meeting with Evan.
A recorded apology that he could choose to hear later.
I agreed.
She sat in an office.
No family audience.
No table.
No food.
“I was angry at Claire because she asked me to account for money.”
She paused.
“I told myself she was using generosity to control me.”
Then:
“I decided I would show her that her money did not decide how my table worked.”
Her eyes filled.
“So I used Evan.”
Good.
No passive voice.
“I instructed people not to serve him. I planned to call him rude when he reached. I did not plan to hit him before that moment, but I chose to hit him when he reached for the food.”
Then:
“He was not stealing.”
Then:
“I lied about meals I said I fed him because I wanted Claire to keep loading the card.”
Then:
“I let being ashamed about money turn into entitlement.”
Finally:
“Claire hitting me afterward was wrong too. But what she did does not reduce what I did to Evan.”
I watched the recording alone.
That sentence mattered.
No competitive victimhood.
No demand for forgiveness.
