Chapter 23 - THE DISTRICT HEARING

The hearing took place in a conference room.

No courtroom.

No jury.

Hearing officer.

District lawyer.

Collins family attorney.

School administrators.

Witnesses called separately.

No children seated together for dramatic confrontation.

Brady wore a collared shirt.

No varsity jacket.

Jasper did not attend because his consequence was not part of the appeal.

Kathleen sat beside her son.

She looked exhausted.

I understood that better than I wanted to.

Principal Grant testified first.

Reports.

Timeline.

Recordings.

Video.

Then defense.

“Did the school initially characterize this as mutual peer conflict?”

“Yes.”

“Did Rosalie shove Jasper?”

“Yes.”

“Did Declan Hayes circulate inflammatory material?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Weaknesses included.

Then audio expert.

Not some television voiceprint wizard.

A district digital-forensics consultant verified file metadata and continuity.

No obvious edits.

Recorder model.

Creation times.

Copies.

Hash values.

Could he prove Brady’s identity scientifically from voice alone?

“No.”

Could witnesses familiar with Brady identify the voice?

Yes, under ordinary evidentiary rules for the hearing.

Brady himself had admitted parts in interviews.

The case did not depend on magic software.

Then bus video.

Backpack.

Mud.

Blocking.

Silent.

Clear.

Then the forced recording.

The hearing officer listened.

Brady lowered his head when his voice said:

Say you started it.

May you like

Kathleen closed her eyes.

No one looked triumphant.
