Chapter 21 - THE POLICE DECISION

Police had reviewed the recorder because threats and property-taking can cross legal lines.

The juvenile prosecutor declined to file the largest charges angry parents imagined.

No robbery charge based merely on every disputed snack.

No adult extortion case.

No detention center.

Instead, Brady was referred to juvenile diversion for harassment/coercion-related conduct and the documented property incident, contingent on admissions and participation.

Jasper received an informal adjustment option.

Conditions proposed:

Counseling.

Restitution.

No contact with identified younger children except unavoidable supervised school settings.

Community service appropriate for age.

Completion could avoid formal adjudication.

Kathleen accepted Jasper’s.

Brady initially refused his.

Why?

Admission language.

Again.

He would admit:

“I pressured Rosalie to make a false recording.”

He wanted:

“I asked Rosalie to correct her statement.”

Words.

Same battlefield in smaller form.

The prosecutor said no.

A juvenile petition remained possible if he rejected diversion.

Brady had to choose.
