Chapter 17 - JASPER BREAKS FIRST

Jasper asked for another interview.

Without Brady.

He had been the easier one to overlook.

Twelve.

Younger brother.

Follower.

Still responsible.

He admitted more.

Brady invented the toll phrase months earlier.

Jasper repeated it.

He blocked Rosalie intentionally before the shove.

He lied when the school asked.

He told Brady about Rosalie carrying the reading recorder.

He suggested making her say I had told her to complain.

That last part was Jasper’s idea.

Why?

“Mr. Hayes scared me.”

I had spoken sharply to him once two weeks earlier when he kicked Rosalie’s lunchbox.

I had said:

“If you touch her things again, I will make sure the school knows exactly what you’re doing.”

Not a threat of violence.

Still intimidating from a large adult.

Jasper transformed:

school knows

into:

Declan hates us.

Then used it in the false story.

The investigator asked:

“Why tell the truth now?”

Jasper answered:

“Brady says it’s all my fault because I told him about recorder.”

There.

Loyalty cracked when blame changed direction.

Messy.

Human.

He also said:

“Brady didn’t make me laugh.”

May you like

Good.

He owned that.
