Chapter 22 - THE GIRLS

Ava and Grace were not villains.

That took me longer to accept emotionally than logically.

At the restaurant, they drank Noah’s juice.

They were nine.

Adults handed it to them.

Later Grace told Lauren:

“I thought Grandma bought it for everyone.”

Ava remembered Noah looking sad.

“Why didn’t you give it back?” Lauren asked.

Ava cried.

“Grandma gets mad.”

Children learn hierarchy too.

Lauren brought the girls to family therapy.

Noah joined once.

Grace said:

“I’m sorry about the juice.”

Noah shrugged.

“It was apple.”

Grace laughed.

Then:

“Grandma always gives us more.”

Noah looked at her.

“I know.”

Nobody needed to explain further.

The children had already noticed the accounting.
