Chapter 18 - THE MISSING MINUTES

Digital investigators recovered deleted audio from Dad’s home-office smart speaker.

Not because it was spying.

The device retained short voice-command buffers in a cloud backup.

One buffer caught part of a conversation between my parents before the trust challenge was filed.

Mom:

“If Ethan knows about Noah’s branch, he’ll demand the same treatment.”

Dad:

“He already thinks everything should be equal.”

Mom:

“Because he doesn’t understand Lauren needs us.”

Dad:

“He also pays half our bills.”

Mom:

“That’s different.”

Dad laughed.

“Why?”

Long silence.

Mom:

“Because Ethan can take it.”

That sentence followed me for weeks.

Then another recovered fragment.

Dad:

“If Noah’s status stays unresolved through next year, we close Harbor and fix the numbers later.”

Mom:

“And Ethan?”

Dad:

“He won’t let the house fail.”

They knew exactly how dependable I was.

My generosity had become collateral before a bank ever wrote my name.
