Chapter 20 - DAD’S CONFESSION
Dad resisted longer than Mom.
Then Harbor Financial sued.
Not me initially.
The loan defaulted after I stopped payments.
Dad could not cover it.
The lender demanded cure.
My counsel disputed the guarantee.
The trust disputed collateral consent.
Under pressure, Dad sat for deposition.
“Did Ethan knowingly execute the final guarantee?”
Long silence.
“No.”
“Who applied his electronic signature?”
Dad closed his eyes.
“I did.”
There.
No dramatic hacking mastermind.
My father.
At his desk.
Using the credential reset after my preliminary authorization.
“Why?”
“I believed he would agree.”
“Did you ask?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because he had started questioning how much we gave Lauren.”
“Would he have agreed?”
Dad looked toward me.
“No.”
That was why.
Consent was inconvenient.
“Did you create the trust waiver bearing Martin Hale’s signature?”
“Yes.”
“Did you fabricate the Sarah email?”
Another silence.
“Yes.”
Mom began crying.
Lauren covered her mouth.

Maybe because the truth had arrived slowly enough that confession only completed paperwork.
