Chapter 4 - LUKE’S OTHER DAUGHTER

Luke stopped speaking.

His attorney issued the instruction.

No further questions.

No explanation to me.

No apology to Eli.

Police obtained an emergency warrant for portions of his phone data based on the infant-band evidence, Eli’s statement, and DNA result.

The hospital transferred the other newborn to a secure nursery.

She could not remain indefinitely unidentified.

Her medical care continued.

She had done nothing wrong.

I asked her name.

No one knew.

The registration attached to Natalie Patterson’s delivery called her Baby Girl Patterson.

If Luke was her biological father, that did not tell us what her mother called her privately.

Eli asked:

“Is she my sister?”

I could not answer cleanly.

“She may be your half-sister.”

“What’s half?”

“A child who shares one parent.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

He thought.

“Is June still my whole sister?”

“Yes.”

That answer nearly broke me.

The police located the short-term rental booking.

Paid with prepaid card.

IP address traced to a coffee shop.

The fake driver’s license used the photograph of a real woman named Natalie Reeves.

Natalie Reeves lived in Oregon.

Not involved.

The woman in the hospital used another person’s face identity.

But surveillance footage captured her clearly.

Brown hair.

Early thirties.

Postpartum patient.

She had genuinely given birth there.

No prosthetic pregnancy.

No fake belly.

Her infant had been delivered vaginally six hours before June.

Who was she?

Facial recognition through law-enforcement databases did not immediately identify her.

Luke’s phone might.

His attorney fought scope.

The court allowed emergency location-related data and communications tied to the hospital period.

One number appeared repeatedly.

Saved as:

N.

Messages were mostly deleted.

Cloud recovery began.

A surviving message from eleven days earlier:

N: Are you sure this is the only way?

Luke: Once she delivers, everything becomes irreversible.

N: What about the boy?

Luke: Eli won’t understand.

My son had understood enough.

Another:

N: I want my baby.

Luke: You will have everything you were promised.

I read those words through Detective Hayes’s summary.

Not the full messages.

“What did he promise?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The first central temptation was obvious.

Affair.

Money.

Baby.

But Hayes refused to name the whole scheme yet.

Good.

Because details still contradicted each other.

If Natalie wanted her baby, why leave with mine?

If Luke wanted his affair child, why place her beside me?

If the plan was to hide paternity, putting his biological child into our hospital room was reckless.

Unless he needed her legally recorded as mine.

Why?

The Mercer family trust.

Rachel Sloan arrived the next morning.

I had called her because she handled my mother’s estate years earlier.

She immediately requested Mercer trust records through my marital attorney.

Luke’s family lawyers resisted.

Rachel said:

“If the trust has no relevance, they can say that under oath.”

That afternoon, Luke’s mother, Evelyn Mercer, called me.

I had not spoken to her since surgery.

She sounded frightened.

“Claire, do not accuse the family publicly.”

“My daughter is missing.”

“I know.”

“Your son swapped her.”

“We don’t know what happened.”

“The baby beside me is his.”

Silence.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You hesitated.”

“I’m trying to understand.”

“Then explain the first-granddaughter trust.”

The line went dead.

Not disconnected accidentally.

Ended.

I looked at Rachel.

She said:

“That answered whether it matters.”

The trust was sealed within private estate records.

But one memorandum survived in county probate.

Theodore Mercer created a descendant trust thirty-three years earlier.

Beneficiary language referenced:

the first biological daughter born to the senior male Mercer line.

Ridiculous.

Old-fashioned.

Legally real.

Luke was the only surviving male descendant in that line.

His first biological daughter would trigger control of a significant asset pool.

But the girl in the nursery had been born before June.

Three hours and nineteen minutes before.

Luke’s affair child was legally and biologically the “first daughter.”

The trust had already activated before I entered surgery.

And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make everyone believe that first daughter was mine.
