Evelyn was indicted.
Not for physically swapping the babies.
Evidence remained insufficient to prove she entered the hospital plan at that level before it happened.
Charges focused on:
Conspiracy tied to concealment.
Obstruction.
Interference with custody after the swap.
Financial fraud related to the logistics transaction.
False statements.
Use of family-company resources to hide Marianne and June.
She pleaded not guilty.
Her defense:
She learned of the infant swap only after Luke called in panic.
She ordered transport to prevent “a hysterical scene” until attorneys could intervene.
That phrase did not help.
She claimed she intended June returned safely.
Then why move Marianne twice?
Security.
Why no police?
Family privacy.
Why instruct staff to use cash phones?
Donor confidentiality.
Every explanation returned to control.
Luke’s case approached trial.
His attorneys sought a plea.
Prosecutors demanded admissions covering:
Baby swap.
Fraudulent identity plan.
Trust manipulation.
Assault on Eli.
Corporate side arrangement.
Luke resisted admitting he endangered June.
“She was with her biological mother’s counterpart,” his lawyer reportedly argued.
No.
Marianne was not June’s mother.
A newborn removed from parents under false identity is endangered even if the person holding her provides food.
Eventually Luke agreed to factual language.
Before the plea hearing, I received his first accountability letter.
Claire,
There is no version of this where I believed you would be okay with it. That is why I hid it.
Better than excuses.
I read on.
I thought if I could fix the trust first, I could fix the family afterward.
There it was.
Humans as after-problems.
He wrote:
I knew Eli saw more than I expected. I hit him because I was afraid he would destroy the plan.
I stopped.
I handed the letter to Rachel.
“Keep it.”
“Do you want to finish?”
“No.”
I had enough.
At the plea hearing, Luke admitted:
Rose was his daughter.
He knew she would be born before June.
He created the temporary substitution plan.
He paid Melissa.
He removed June’s band.
He gave June to Marianne.
He placed Rose into my room.
He intended fraudulent birth and trust records.
He struck Eli to silence him.
He planned to reverse the babies later.
He participated in concealing the logistics-related conflict.
He did not claim he intended either infant harmed.
The government did not accuse him of intending physical harm to them.
Intent and danger remained separate.
He pleaded guilty to serious federal and state offenses under a coordinated agreement.
Sentencing later.
