June was fifteen when she asked for the full court-approved family history.
She knew basics.
Not details.
We sat with her therapist.
She learned:
Luke had another daughter first.
Rose’s birth activated a trust.
Luke wanted control over a corporate vote.
He swapped their hospital identities temporarily.
Evelyn helped hide June after the plan failed.
Eli stopped the bassinet.
Camille scanned the tag.
Marianne surrendered.
June read quietly.
Then:
“Dad picked Rose instead of me.”
“No.”
She looked at me angrily.
“He literally put her in my place.”
“He used both of you.”
“That’s worse.”
“Yes.”
I let the anger stand.
“Did he love Rose more?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he love me?”
“I don’t know what his feelings were. I know his actions were abusive and dangerous.”
She hated that answer.
Months later, she admitted it was better than pretending.
She asked to see the original ankle-band photograph.
I showed her a court copy.
Plastic.
Numbers.
Nothing dramatic.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
She looked disappointed.
