Chapter 13 - MARIANNE’S PROFFER

Marianne agreed to a formal proffer.
No immunity.
She admitted the affair.
The plan.
The fake identity.
Taking June.
Accepting money.
Running after Evelyn’s call.
She also provided financial evidence.
Luke had used Mercer Family Services to hide affair expenses.
Hotel rooms.
Apartment rent.
Medical care.
Prenatal testing.
Payments to Marianne’s consulting company.
Some were personal.
Some were booked as corporate communications.
Mercer Holdings opened a separate expense investigation.
Again, not every affair dollar became securities fraud.
Bookkeeping and disclosure mattered.
Marianne said Luke originally intended to acknowledge Rose after the logistics sale.
Then divorce me.
I asked Rachel:
“Did he ever love me?”
She looked tired.
“That is not a question discovery can answer.”
Correct.
I hated it.
Marianne’s attorney requested permission for her to write me.
I declined.
Then reconsidered months later.
One screened letter.
She wrote:
I told myself June was safe because I held her. I understand now that I used your daughter to make what I wanted feel possible.
Good start.
Then:
Luke told me you were cold and would never forgive a child born from an affair.
I stopped.
He had prepared us against each other.
Maybe he believed it.
Maybe not.
I returned the letter unread beyond that.
Marianne’s accountability did not require my participation.
Her cooperation helped locate:
Side-deal contracts.
Evelyn’s instructions.
Luke’s hidden accounts.
A draft divorce strategy.
That last file hurt.
POST-TRANSACTION FAMILY PLAN.
After logistics sale:
Luke separates from Claire.
Seek joint custody of Eli and June.
Acknowledge Rose through sealed proceeding.
Establish Marianne in Boston.
Negotiate Claire confidentiality using “medical/postpartum instability” documentation.
Postpartum instability.
I had undergone a C-section.
Taken pain medication.
Cried.
Slept poorly.
All normal.
Luke’s attorneys had begun collecting notes.
One email to Evelyn:
Claire will be easy to characterize after delivery.
My hands shook.
The baby swap was not only a forty-eight-hour trick.
He had an after-plan.
He intended to use my postpartum state to control the story if records surfaced.
That was a deeper betrayal.
My own medical chart became protected aggressively.
I revoked every family authorization.
Independent pediatric portal for June.
Separate proxy rules.
No Mercer office handling insurance forms.
Boring safeguards.
Necessary.
Then the special committee found that Luke had already sent a draft advisory memo to Rose’s trustee before birth.
It assumed:

Child born within marriage to Claire Mercer.
He had prepared the lie before either girl entered the world.
