Chapter 9 - SIGN BEFORE FRIDAY
The email chain began with Gerald.
If anyone gets hurt before closing, we need family statements immediately. Northbridge cannot receive a defect narrative.
Patricia:
Then keep outsiders downstairs.
Gerald:
Charlotte wants gallery photos.
Patricia:
It will hold for one night.
Gerald:
Engineer disagrees.
Patricia:
Engineer wants six thousand dollars.
Gerald:
If something happens?
Patricia:
We control the event report.
I read the exchange until the words stopped looking real.
They knew.
Not that Emma would fall.
Not who would be injured.
But they knew the gallery was dangerous enough for Gerald to ask:

Patricia’s answer:
We control the event report.
Then the chain after the accident.
Gerald:
Child fell. Alive. Ambulance took her.
Patricia:
Did Rebecca see?
Gerald:
No.
Patricia:
Good.
Gerald:
Charlotte upset.
Patricia:
Get her signature before she talks to anyone.
Gerald:
Buyer inspection Friday.
Patricia:
We need Rebecca too.
Gerald:
She won’t sign while child is critical.
Patricia:
She will if she thinks we’re only asking for party damages.
The $2,300 invoice.
Not pettiness alone.
Camouflage.
Patricia added charges for the cake, flowers, linens, and cleanup so the packet looked like an offensive but ordinary family demand.
Behind it:
The liability acknowledgment.
They expected me to argue about money.
Then sign or initial while exhausted.
If I refused at Cedar Hollow, they planned to try again.
At the hospital.
That was why Gerald and Patricia arrived together.
Why Gerald blocked the doorway.
Why Patricia brought the packet.
Why she became more violent when I refused.
Still, the oxygen mask attack had not been in the written plan.
No message said:
Threaten Emma’s life.
The escalation happened in the room.
Patricia’s own choice.
That distinction would matter at trial.
Charlotte’s role also became clearer.
She knew the party had endangered the sale only after Emma fell.
She signed a false witness statement under pressure.
Then she helped draft part of the invoice.
But emails showed she objected to approaching me in ICU.
Charlotte:
Do not go to the hospital with that paper.
Patricia:
Stay out of it.
Charlotte:
Emma is unconscious.
Patricia:
Exactly why Rebecca will sign.
Charlotte did not stop them.
But she did not approve that part.
Different guilt.
Different consequences.
Maya turned off the laptop.
“This is enough for the larger theory.”
“Say it.”
“Tomorrow.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Why tomorrow?”
“Because prosecutors are executing warrants tonight. I want to know whether Gerald also concealed the structural report from the insurer and buyer through a separate certification.”
“What difference does that make?”
“It tells us whether the cover-up was improvised around Emma or part of a transaction-wide fraud.”
That difference mattered.
At two in the morning, Detective Ellis called.
They found the original engineer’s report in Gerald’s home safe.
Across the top Patricia had written:
DO NOT SCAN INTO SALE ROOM.
Underneath:
FIX AFTER CLOSING.
The next line was in Gerald’s handwriting.
IF INCIDENT, USE GUEST-FAULT FORM.
I looked at Emma sleeping beside me.
Then at Marcus.
The secret no longer needed inference.
