Chapter 22 - THE MEDICAL FILE
At sixteen, Emma asked to read her medical records.
Not all at once.
We met with her doctor first.
She learned:
Small subdural hemorrhage.
Pulmonary contusion.
Aspiration.
Temporary oxygen dependence.
Desaturation during the hospital incident.
No permanent cognitive impairment identified.
Occasional headaches in early childhood.
Resolved.
She stared at Nurse Rachel’s note.
Maternal grandmother removed oxygen interface despite staff instruction.
Patient desaturated during associated line disruption.
“Grandma actually took it off.”
“Yes.”
“I knew the story. It looks different written.”
“That happens.”
Emma traced Rachel’s name.
“Can I meet her?”
Rachel still worked at St. Catherine.
We contacted her.
She agreed.
Emma brought flowers.
Rachel said:
“You don’t owe me flowers.”
“I know.”
Good start.
They spoke for an hour.
Emma asked:
“Were you scared?”
Rachel answered:
“Yes.”
That surprised her.
“Then how did you know what to do?”
“Training. And people around me.”
