Chapter 17 - MY MARRIAGE AFTER THE ICU
Marcus and I almost separated.
Not because he punched Gerald.
Not only.
Because the crisis exposed how differently we handled my family.
Marcus had warned me for years.
“Your mother treats kindness like a debt.”
“Your father expects signatures before explanations.”
I defended them.
“They’re difficult.”
“They’re still my parents.”
After the hospital, Marcus wanted no contact ever.
I agreed emotionally.
Then Charlotte entered cooperation.
Cedar Hollow employees needed information.
Legal cases required interaction.
My feelings became messier.
Marcus said:
“They nearly killed Emma.”
“They endangered her twice.”
“That sounds like you’re minimizing.”
“It sounds like I’m trying to be accurate.”
We fought.
He slept in the guest room.
In couples therapy, Dr. Morris asked:
“What are you each protecting?”
Marcus:
“Emma.”
Me:
“My ability to decide what family means now.”
That changed the argument.
Marcus did not get unilateral power over my relationship with Charlotte because he had been right about Patricia.
I did not get to demand he feel safe around people who traumatized our daughter.
We built boundaries together.
No Patricia or Gerald contact with Emma.
No Charlotte contact without both parents agreeing while Emma was young.
All family communication through written channels initially.
No surprise visits.
No money exchanges without documentation.
No one signs anything same day it is presented.
