Chapter 24 - RETURNING TO CEDAR HOLLOW

Emma was twenty-two when she asked to see Cedar Hollow.

The new owners had converted it into a boutique inn and community event center.

The gallery was structurally different.

Glass barrier.

Steel posts.

No white hydrangeas.

No red rope.

I offered to go.

Marcus did too.

Emma said:

“I want to go alone first.”

That frightened me.

I let her.

She returned three hours later.

“Well?”

“The coffee is bad.”

I laughed.

“What about upstairs?”

“I stood there.”

“And?”

“It’s a railing.”

That was all.

Months later, we attended a charity dinner there together.

Emma walked upstairs.

Touched the glass.

Then came back down.

No ceremony.

May you like

No collapse.

A building had become a building again.
