Chapter 17 - GAVIN’S THEORY OF MARRIAGE
Gavin requested one civil deposition before criminal trial.
Bianca’s attorney agreed because property issues required testimony.
He was calm.
That was almost worse.
He admitted asking Bianca to sign the management authorization.
Why?
“Financial efficiency.”
Why before birth?
“We were updating planning.”
Why at Lenora’s house?
“Neutral setting.”
Why without Bianca’s attorney?
“She didn’t need one for every marital conversation.”
Then medication.
Criminal counsel instructed him not to answer certain questions.
His right.
Then property.
“Did you know Crescent Holdings belonged to Marcello?”
“I believed Bianca had a beneficial interest.”
“Based on what?”
“Succession materials.”
“Did you read the words ‘for discussion only’?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
There.
Then:
“Did you understand a revocable trust could be changed?”
“Yes.”
“So why list the assets as Bianca’s?”
“Because everyone knew they were intended for her.”
Intention as title.
The same family thinking that ruins wills and marriages.
Then the most revealing answer.
“If Bianca received forty million while we were married, did you believe you should control management?”
“I believed spouses should manage together.”
“Together means what?”
“Not her father.”
There.
I was the enemy inside his marriage.
Then:
“If Bianca chose independent advisers?”
“She was choosing Marcello’s system.”
“What if she chose herself?”
Gavin looked irritated.
“She never chose without him.”
Bianca later said:
“That’s what he really believed.”
Not that she had too much money.

The tragedy was that my own controlling habits made that lie easier for Gavin to tell.
